Saving Thousands with Home Beauty Remedies!...

So, I am tired of spending THOUSANDS of dollars a year looking “younger than 50.” Over the past year, I purchased 4 different eye creams (one was $400) and they all have worked really well, or at least I thought so. Over the past year, I acquired several different facial moisturizers – one for day, one for night, one for summer, one for winter, one when my face is drier than usual, one when my face is more oily.  Damn that Barney’s cosmetics counter!    They sure know how to sell their product. Then there’s the deep hair conditioners, the foot cream, the hand cream, the body cream, the body scrubs, facial masks, astringents, pore minimizers, facial brighteners, vitamin C cream, and teeth whiteners.  Shit, I have spent so much on stuff. And  I’ve only used half of it. Used the vitamin C cream once, facial brightener a few times. Oy vey!  Stop the madness!  My neighbor is the president of a private label cosmetics company and said that many products we use in the kitchen can double as beauty aids. Love that!  As a person who does many things at the same time, I love that I can look younger, eat and save a lot of money as I catch the latest “The Voice” on TV. Through several hours of talking with my neighbor and others in the beauty business, here’s my short list for home remedy beauty aids. Can’t wait to try them! Facial Scrub 3 medium size strawberries, 1 tablespoon of honey. Mash strawberries and fold in honey. Using small circles, massage the mixture into your face for 3 minutes; then rinse with warm water. The natural fruit enzyme in strawberries sloughs off the dull top layer of the skin. The honey...

Who Wants to Look 7 Years Younger Without Cosmetic Surgery?...

Who doesn’t want to look 7 years younger with or without surgery?  I am not against a little nip and tuck here and there, but the majority of face lifts in Los Angeles scare the crap out of me. I don’t want my eyes to look stretched, or my hairline to be moved, or my jaw line to have that tell-tale “pulled back behind my ears” (that have also been moved) look either. Now, before I start getting letters from all the plastic surgeons who live here, and I know a quite a few of you, I do know that there are some that do amazing work, with none of the tell-tale signs. And, looking younger in the face is a small part of looking younger. I consulted my Go-To-Gay Stylist to the Stars for the top things you can do to achieve an overall younger look without turning to surgery. He recommends the following: 1. Hydration, hydration, hydration. Drink lots of water. Our bodies are made up of mostly water. Not only does drinking it keep you full, it hydrates the skin, and gives you energy. He also recommends replacing your soft drinks with water – NOW!  Ok, ok – I am going! 2. Institute a regular skin care regime. Aim for flawless skin. Get facials once a month. Stay out of the sun and use a good sunscreen. Wash your face at least two times a day, once in the morning, and once at night. Never sleep with your make-up on. Use a high-quality, hydrating eye cream and moisturizer. I have this one covered. There’s nothing more “older looking” than a woman with deep wrinkles and skin beyond her years from being out in the sun too much, drinking too much, not...

Male Manopause!

In the last few months, my husband has been unbearably irritable. Surely the reasons can’t be because  I sometimes don’t change the empty roll of toilet paper, or turn the lights off when I leave the room, or forget to load the dishwasher, or don’t have time to put the wet laundry in the dryer. And it is absolutely not parking too close to his car, or taking up the whole bed, leaving him with a tiny corner of the King, or leave the water running full speed when I brush my teeth. And I am positive that it’s not that sometimes I leave the top off the toothpaste,  take long shower leaving him with no hot water, or talk incessantly to my friends and relatives on the phone when he’s watching sports. He’s been dealing with all my obnoxious habits for more than 20 years. That, along with my great sense of humor,  generosity,  intelligence, great cooking skills and general cuteness. No, it could not be me. No, it’s gotta be something else. I did some research on the internet, and aha! Maybe he’s going through manopause!  I learned that male menopause involves  hormonal, physiological and chemical changes that occur in ALL men between the ages of 40-55, though it can occur as early as 35 or as late as 65. In his book, Male Menopause, author Jed Diamond lists the top warning signs of male menopause. My husband has a several of them: Taking longer to recover from injuries. (Or talking longer about injuries) Decreased memory (How about selective memory loss?) Feeling fat. (He rides his bicycle 100 miles a week and thinks he’s fat – nice!) Sleep disturbances. (from my occasional snoring?) Irritability. (Bingo!) So what’s a man going through Manopause to do?...

Healing the Body and Soul To Slow the Aging Process...

A moving bus is not a sound that heals. A horn blowing from a car is not a sound that heals.  A jackhammer in the middle of the afternoon when you’re trying to write a story for the Santa Monica Mirror is most definitely NOT a sound that heals. But certain sounds do heal, as I found out a few weeks ago. I recently visited Naam Yoga, an international yoga, healing and wellness center – located on 4th between Wilshire and Arizona in Santa Monica. I had heard about a powerful treatment called Harmonyum, a transformational healing modality that in part, uses sound for lasting change. Naam Yoga LA’s Executive Director Jane Mirshak explained that Harmonyum directly sends healing energy to the source of the nervous system, brain and heart. I learned that it is excellent for pain, insomnia, hormone imbalance, stress and anxiety, learning disorders, fertility, heart disease and immune system challenges. It also strengthens and balances the autonomous nervous system by promoting the body’s capacity to heal itself and slow the aging process. Slow the aging process?  Now you’re talkin’!  When can I start? I made an appointment for the following week. The day of the appointment, I toured the facility. It looks a lot smaller from the outside; once you’re inside, it’s another story. First, there’s a large reception area, with a communal table for people to wait for classes or just relax. Then, I followed Jane down a long, narrow industrial-looking hallway, lined with beautiful large pictures depicting peaceful spiritual places around the world. This hallway ran alongside their 3,000 square-foot, sky-lit studio which holds over 300 people. A variety of yoga classes are taught there, as well as those fun Zumba classes. Just at the end of the hallway, there was another peaceful area with several tables and chairs for relaxation and socializing. After taking my shoes off and heading up the stairs, there...
